The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) on September 10, 2026 has introduced a new auto-population facility in FORM GST REG-01 to simplify the process of obtaining an additional GST registration for businesses already having an active GSTIN under the same Permanent Account Number (PAN). The facility has been made live on the GST Portal from 1 September 2026.
The new functionality is intended to make the registration process faster and more convenient by allowing eligible details already available in the GST system to be auto-populated from an existing active GSTIN. This reduces the need for taxpayers to repeatedly enter information that has already been furnished and is available in the GST database.
The facility can be used by an applicant who already has an active GSTIN under the same PAN, whether the new GST registration is being sought in the same State or in another State, subject to the applicable registration requirements. The initiative is particularly useful for businesses expanding their operations and requiring an additional GST registration.
While filling Part-B of FORM GST REG-01, an eligible applicant can opt for the auto-population facility by selecting “Yes – Auto-Populate Details”. This enables the GST system to use eligible information available against the applicant’s existing GST registration for the new registration application.
As part of the verification process, the Primary Authorised Signatory (PAS) of the existing GSTIN is required to provide consent through an One-Time Password (OTP). The OTP-based verification provides an additional layer of authentication before information from the existing registration is used for auto-population in the new application.
Upon successful OTP verification, the eligible registration details available in the GST system are automatically populated in the new registration application. The applicant can thereafter review the pre-filled information, make edits wherever required and proceed to save and continue with the registration process.
The facility has also incorporated a communication mechanism for greater transparency. Relevant Promoters/Partners are notified through SMS and e-mail after successful verification, helping ensure that concerned persons are informed about the use of existing registration information in connection with the new registration application.
By leveraging information already available in the GST system, the new feature is expected to substantially reduce repetitive data entry and minimise the effort involved in filing applications for additional GST registrations. It is also expected to improve consistency in registration information and reduce errors that may arise from repeated manual entry of the same particulars.
The initiative reflects GSTN’s continuing focus on developing a taxpayer-centric, data-driven and digitally enabled GST ecosystem. The facility has been designed to provide a faster, secure and reliable registration experience while retaining the applicant’s ability to review and edit the auto-populated information before proceeding further.
The key benefit of the new functionality may be summed up as “Less Data Entry, Less Time, More Convenience”. By allowing information already available with the GST system to support a new registration application, the facility is expected to make business expansion and compliance more seamless.
Taxpayers eligible to use the facility may access it through the GST Portal while filing FORM GST REG-01 for an additional GST registration under the same PAN.
