[Tax News] Council nod for amnesty bill for PSUs’ tax dues

The legislative council on Thursday sanctioned a bill intended to provide amnesty to public sector undertakings of the Central and state govt regarding their tax obligations to the Maharashtra govt.

While presenting the state budget for FY 2025-26, Ajit Pawar had announced an amnesty scheme for pending arrears. The govt anticipates tax revenue of around Rs 8,000 crore from this scheme, with the majority of unrealized tax revenue arising from tax disputes with Central govt departments and oil marketing companies.

State finance minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday indicated these enterprises had approximately Rs 25,000 crore outstanding in the form of tax, interests and levies, and the new legislation would extend the deadline until Dec 2025 to facilitate payment of dues. According to Ajit Pawar, the public sector undertakings of the Centre and state are expected to remit several thousand crores under the scheme, ultimately augmenting the state’s treasury.

Such initiatives have been offering concessions if the organizations settled a specified portion of the dues.

To a query by legislator Sachin Ahir on why such a scheme was not introduced for private and cooperative organizations, Pawar stated similar schemes were implemented for them in 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2024.
