State Tax Team Udhampur Cracks Another Fake ITC Case, Recovers Rs 7.04 Lakh Penalty

In a significant crackdown on tax evasion, the Enforcement Team of the State Taxes Department in Udhampur has unearthed another fraudulent Input Tax Credit (ITC) case, leading to the recovery of a penalty amounting to Rs 7.04 lakh.

The case, which involved the wrongful issuance of bills to pass on ineligible ITC, was detected through meticulous data analysis. A local taxpayer was found generating multiple “bill to ship to” invoices across various states, including a Rajasthan-based firm, to illegally transfer ITC benefits.

The enforcement action was led by Inspector Mohit Jamwal under the supervision of State Tax Officer Sahida Akhtar, with strategic guidance from Deputy Commissioner, State Taxes Enforcement Jammu North, Anil Kumar Chandail.

This development is part of the department’s intensified efforts to tackle tax fraud and ensure the integrity of the tax system. Notably, the Udhampur enforcement wing has recovered penalties amounting to Rs 24.59 lakh in May 2025 alone.

In a sign of improving compliance and enforcement effectiveness, the department reported a revenue realisation of Rs 25.03 lakh last month — a strong 28 per cent increase from Rs 19.53 lakh in the same period last year.

P.K. Bhat, Commissioner of the State Tax Department, Jammu & Kashmir, praised the Udhampur team for their vigilance and commitment. “Such consistent action reinforces the department’s resolve to protect public revenue and uphold tax discipline,” he said.

Namrita Dogra, Additional Commissioner, Jammu, also lauded the team’s focused and result-oriented enforcement efforts.

The department has urged all taxpayers to adhere to GST regulations and contribute towards the country’s economic progress. For assistance or clarification, taxpayers are encouraged to visit the official department website or consult their nearest tax office.

The State Tax Department reiterated its commitment to a transparent and equitable tax regime across Jammu & Kashmir and warned that attempts to evade taxes will continue to face stringent scrutiny and legal consequences.
