State GST Department inspections in bar hotels reveal tax evasion

Inspections carried out in bar hotels across Kerala have revealed large-scale turnover suppression and tax evasion, the State Goods and Services Tax Department said on Saturday.

The inspections, conducted by the intelligence and enforcements divisions of the department in 45 bar hotels, revealed turnover suppression to the tune of ₹ 127.46 crore and tax evasion of ₹12 crore.

Christened ‘Prancing Pony,’ the operation lasted from 4.30 p.m. on September 25 to the early hours of September 26. The inspections focused on bar hotels that were evading tax payments by defaulting on the timely filing of monthly returns, the department said in a statement.

The State GST Commissioner said investigations will continue against establishments that indulge in tax evasion.
