The Gujarat government has suspended two State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) officials in Jamnagar following allegations of negligence and procedural lapses in handling tax notices, amid growing concerns over fake Input Tax Credit (ITC) scams.
Assistant Commissioner SK Patel and State Tax Officer Rahul Mota, both posted in Jamnagar, have been immediately suspended and barred from leaving their headquarters. The move follows an inquiry that revealed that certain tax notices issued to local traders were not properly followed up, and serious lapses in duty and procedural compliance were observed.
Sources in the SGST department indicated that the officials’ negligence may have facilitated bogus ITC claims and related financial irregularities. Investigations into fake invoicing and other tax-related frauds across the state flagged both officers’ roles as suspicious, prompting urgent action.
Meanwhile, a high-level committee has been formed to conduct a thorough financial audit and inquiry into their actions, and further stringent action, including possible legal proceedings, may follow based on the findings.
