Policewoman duped of Rs 79L on pretext of customs duty on ‘gifts’

The cyber cell of the Ludhiana (rural) police district has initiated a probe into an incident in which a lady policewoman posted at the DIG office here has been duped of Rs 79,17,000 on the pretext of customs duty on “expensive gifts” allegedly sent by a swindler.

The victim, identified as Amarjit Kaur (35) of Pamal village, had received a call from a WhatsApp number (+44 7354296841), suspectedly from England, in response to an advertisement given in a newspaper by her for matrimonial alliance. The suspect accepted the proposal and claimed to send some expensive gifts to her.

The caller, introducing himself as Jassi from England, had asked to transfer Rs 79,17,000 towards customs duty on the gifts, which never reached her. Following which, she sent the money.

Having verified allegations levelled by the complainant, the cyber cell police station, Ludhiana (rural), initiated a probe into the incident after registering an FIR under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
