‘Never about money but intent’: Arvind Kejriwal lauds Punjab for record GST collection, credits ‘AAP model of governance’

Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday launched a fresh pitch around governance and delivery after Punjab reported record GST collection for the month of April.

Recalling how previous governments often cited lack of funds to justify inaction, he argued that the state’s recent rise in revenue under what he described as ‘honest governance’ has shown a different path.

According to Kejriwal, the additional revenue is now being channelled into public welfare and infrastructure, calling it a reflection of what he termed the ‘AAP governance model in Punjab.’

Kejriwal also shared a post of Punjab’s Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, who shared a table comparing the GST collection of all the states.

In a post on X, Cheema said, Punjab has recorded a historic 66% growth in GST collections for April 2026 — the highest ever in its history — and that it surpassed all major states and even the national average.

According to Cheema, the AAP-led Punjab government set a benchmark with the highest-ever monthly GST collection of Rs 2,987.38 crore for the month of April.

According to Outlook Business, Cheema quoted Government of India data and declared that Punjab has recorded a staggering 66% growth in post-settlement GST, surging from Rs 1,795 crore last year to Rs 2,987 crore.

“This establishes us as the highest-growing state in the country, significantly outperforming the all-India growth average and leading all north Indian states,” said Cheema.

India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections rose to an all-time high of Rs 2.43 lakh crore in April this year, a sharp increase from Rs 2.23 lakh crore in April 2025, translating into a year-on-year growth of 8.7 percent in gross GST collections.
