Mumbai man arrested for Rs 75 lakh GST fraud

Bicholim police have arrested a Mumbai resident for allegedly committing a fraud of Rs 75 lakh by obtaining registration on the central GST portal under the trade name Green Agro Industries in Aug 2021 using forged documents. A GST officer, in her complaint, said that the accused person, with the intention of cheating, deliberately failed to pay tax on supplies, thereby causing loss to govt exchequer.

The complaint was lodged by Sophia Lawrence E Vaz, GST officer with the department of commercial tax, on Jan 13 at Bicholim police station, requesting to file an FIR against Omprakash Kewat for fraudulently obtaining registration on the Central GST portal, showing the principal place of business at Parye, Bicholim, by uploading forged documents like an electricity bill and consent letter.

However, during the investigation, police identified the accused to be Dinesh Punja Patni, 38, a resident of Navi Mumbai.

Patni was produced before a court at Belapur and was granted two-day transit remand. Later, he was placed in four-day police custody by the Bicholim JMFC.
