Small businesses in the city have raised concerns over GST compliance issues, saying delays in refunds and complex procedures are putting pressure on their finances and slowing expansion. At a GST Samvaad consultation organised by the India SME Forum in the city, MSME representatives flagged several on-ground problems in the tax system and sought practical reforms. Senior officials from Central and State GST departments, including Commissioner Anoop Kumar Sharma, Additional Commissioner Vishal Malani, Deputy Commissioner B M Jograjya and Assistant Commissioner B R Dangar, were present at the meeting.
Participants said while GST has streamlined indirect taxation, its implementation still creates a heavy compliance burden for small businesses. One major issue raised was the need for separate registration in every state. MSMEs said this forces them to set up offices, hire staff and undergo repeated verification, increasing costs and delaying registrations from the usual two to three weeks to over two months. Working capital pressure was another key concern. Delays in ITC and TCS refunds strain liquidity for small firms with thin margins.
Other issues discussed included mismatch-related notices in GST returns, vendor compliance risks affecting ITC claims, delays in approvals, and goods being detained over minor documentation errors, disrupting supply chains.
Addressing the meeting, Sharma said, “We will examine the suggestions and concerns raised by the MSMEs to strengthen the GST ecosystem.” President of the forum, said MSMEs support the ‘One Nation, One Tax’ idea but simplified registration and faster refunds are critical for MSMEs to scale,” he said.
