The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) on September 10, 2026 has introduced a new Contextual Guidance facility in FORM GST REG-01 on the GST Portal to make the GST registration process simpler, clearer and more user-friendly. The facility has been made available on the GST Portal with effect from 1 September 2026.
The new functionality is designed to assist applicants at the stage where guidance is most relevant while filling FORM GST REG-01. Instead of requiring users to separately search for instructions or interpret fields without immediate assistance, the GST Portal now displays relevant information messages at appropriate fields to help applicants understand the information required to be furnished.
Under the facility, applicants starting a GST registration application in FORM GST REG-01 will receive contextual information as they proceed through the relevant sections of the form. The guidance is linked to specific fields and is intended to explain the nature of information that needs to be entered, thereby helping applicants complete the registration application more accurately.
The facility also provides additional assistance through tooltips. Applicants can hover over a relevant field to access supplementary guidance, enabling them to understand the context and requirement before entering the details. This “Hover – Learn – Proceed” approach is aimed at providing quick guidance at the right stage of the registration process.
The contextual assistance is expected to make the GST registration process easier particularly for applicants who may require clarification regarding the information sought in individual fields of FORM GST REG-01. By providing guidance within the form itself, the system seeks to reduce ambiguity and enable applicants to proceed with greater confidence.
The enhanced functionality is also expected to support more accurate registration applications, save time and help applicants avoid errors arising from incorrect or incomplete understanding of filing requirements. Better quality of information furnished at the application stage can also contribute to a smoother overall registration experience.
The process under the new facility is simple. An applicant begins the GST registration application in FORM GST REG-01, views the information messages displayed at relevant fields, accesses additional tooltips wherever required, enters the appropriate details and thereafter proceeds to submit the completed registration application.
The initiative forms part of GSTN’s continuing efforts to improve the digital experience of taxpayers and prospective registrants through technology-enabled assistance. By embedding help directly within the registration form, the GST Portal aims to make compliance more intuitive and reduce the need for applicants to seek external guidance for routine field-level queries.
The key objective of the initiative may be summed up as “The Help You Need, Right Where You Need It”, with focus on simpler understanding, more accurate entries and easier GST registration.
Applicants may access the facility by logging in to the GST Portal and opening FORM GST REG-01 for registration.
