
The Chennai Bench of the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) has officially commenced its operations vide Public Notice F. No. GSTAT/Chennai/Misc/01/2026 dated April 01, 2026, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the GST dispute resolution framework in the State of Tamil Nadu. The development is expected to enhance ease of doing business by providing taxpayers with a dedicated and efficient appellate forum.
Operationalisation of Chennai Bench
As per the Public Notice issued on April 1, 2026, the GSTAT Chennai Bench is now functional and ready to hear appeals and applications filed under the provisions of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, the Integrated Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, and the Tamil Nadu Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017.
The temporary office of the Bench has been established at: 2nd Floor, Narmada Block, Customs House, 60, Rajaji Salai, Chennai – 600001.
Jurisdiction of the Chennai Bench
The Chennai Bench shall exercise jurisdiction over key districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Vellore, Tirupathur, Ranipet, and Tiruvannamalai, as notified by the Department of Revenue.
This jurisdictional clarity is expected to streamline appellate proceedings and reduce pendency in GST-related disputes.
Filing of Appeals and Procedural Framework
All appeals, applications, and related proceedings within the jurisdiction must be instituted before the Chennai Bench in accordance with the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (Procedure) Rules, 2025 and other applicable statutory provisions.
The procedural framework ensures uniformity, transparency, and efficiency in handling GST litigation matters.
Availability of E-Filing Advisory and Resources
To facilitate stakeholders, comprehensive resources including the e-filing Advisory, Procedure Rules, 2025, and Presidential Orders have been made available on the GSTAT portal under the ‘NOTICE’ section.
This initiative aims to promote digital filing and provide clear guidance to taxpayers, professionals, and departmental authorities.
