
The Central Government has liberalised the import policy of Low Ash Metallurgical Coke by removing the existing restriction under Chapter 27 of ITC (HS), 2022.
In exercise of the powers conferred under Sections 3 and 5 of the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992, read with relevant provisions of the Foreign Trade Policy, 2023, the DGFT has issued Notification No. 54/2025–26 dated 03rd January 2026, amending the Import Policy and Policy Conditions applicable to Low Ash Metallurgical Coke.
Key Highlights of the Notification
- Policy Condition No. 8 of Chapter 27 has been deleted.
- Import of Low Ash Metallurgical Coke (ash content below 18%) has been made “Free”.
- The liberalised policy covers the following ITC (HS) Codes:
- 27040020 – Coke and semi-coke of lignite or of peat
- 27040030 – Hard coke of coal
- 27040040 – Soft coke of coal
- 27040090 – Other
- The change also applies to coke fines / coke breeze and ultra-low phosphorous metallurgical coke.
Impact
With this amendment, imports of Low Ash Metallurgical Coke under the above ITC (HS) codes will no longer be subject to quantitative or conditional restrictions, thereby facilitating smoother availability of critical raw material for the steel and metallurgical industries.
