Government Appoints Three Technical Members to GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) Benches in Uttar Pradesh

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), acting on the recommendations of the Search-cum-Selection Committee, has approved the appointment of three individuals as Technical Members (State) in the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) for benches located in Uttar Pradesh. These appointments come with a fixed monthly salary of ₹2,25,000 and a tenure of four years from the date the appointees assume charge, or until they attain the age of 67 years, whichever occurs earlier.

The appointed individuals are Vivek Kumar, who has retired as a Member of the Commercial Tax Tribunal, Bench-II, in Lucknow; Ananjai Kumar Rai, who is currently serving as a Member of the Commercial Tax Tribunal, Bench-IV, in Varanasi; and Arvind Kumar, who retired as an Additional Commissioner (Grade-I) in Ayodhya. Their respective dates of birth are 28 June 1964 (Vivek Kumar), 1 January 1967 (Ananjai Kumar Rai), and 29 March 1965 (Arvind Kumar), which aligns with the tenure limitations based on age.

The official order of appointment was issued on 1 July 2025 by the Department of Personnel and Training, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions. It was signed by Kundan Nath, Under Secretary (EO-SM.I), and communicated to relevant offices including the Prime Minister’s Office, the Cabinet Secretariat, and other concerned departments for necessary action and record maintenance.

This move is part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen the appellate mechanism under the GST framework, ensuring timely and effective resolution of tax-related disputes. The appointments to the GSTAT benches in Uttar Pradesh are expected to enhance administrative efficiency and provide a structured forum for appeals under the Goods and Services Tax regime.
