The Government of India has allowed the export of 50,000 metric tonnes (MT) of organic sugar per financial year, with immediate effect.
The decision has been taken by the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, through a Notification No. 51/2025-26 dated December 29, 2025 issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). The export will be permitted under HS Codes 17011490 and 17019990, subject to an overall annual ceiling of 50,000 MT.
As per the revised policy conditions, the export of organic sugar, which was earlier categorised as “Restricted”, will now be allowed within the prescribed quantitative limit. The exports will be regulated in accordance with the procedures laid down under the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP), 2023, as amended from time to time.
Further, the modalities for allocation and monitoring of export quantities will be notified separately by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
This measure is expected to provide a boost to India’s organic sugar sector, support farmers and exporters engaged in organic production, and help India strengthen its presence in the global organic food market.
