Direct Tax Collections Continue Strong Growth Momentum: CBDT Releases Time Series Data (FY 2000–01 to FY 2024–25)

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has released the updated Time Series Data on direct taxes covering the period from FY 2000–01 to FY 2024–25, showcasing a sustained and robust growth trajectory in tax mobilisation, taxpayer base, compliance levels, and overall contribution to the national exchequer.

Record Direct Tax Collections in FY 2024–25

As per provisional data for FY 2024–25, total Direct Tax collections stand at ₹22.26 lakh crore, reflecting continued buoyancy and improved voluntary compliance.

States’ Share Shows Broad-Based Growth

The data indicates a broad-based rise in collections across States and Union Territories. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat remain among the highest contributors.

Direct Taxes Strengthen Fiscal Position

The share of direct taxes in total tax revenue has increased to 58.81% in FY 2024–25, up from 56.71% in FY 2023–24, highlighting a healthier and more progressive tax ecosystem.

Improved Tax–GDP Ratio

The Direct Tax-GDP ratio increased to 6.73% in FY 2024–25, compared to 6.51% in FY 2023–24, indicating the strengthening role of direct taxes in the economy.

Sharp Rise in Registered Taxpayers and Return Filers

  • The number of ITR filers increased to 9.18 crore in FY 2024–25, compared to 8.61 crore in FY 2023–24.
  • The total number of taxpayers reached 12.13 crore, reflecting a significant boost from 10.41 crore in the previous year.

Cost of Collection Declines Further

The cost of tax collection continues to reduce, standing at 0.41% in FY 2024–25, making India’s direct tax administration one of the most efficient globally.

CBDT’s Statement

CBDT stated that the continued increase in direct tax collections and widening compliance are indicative of:

  • Strengthening formal economy
  • Enhanced taxpayer services
  • Increased digitisation and use of analytics
  • Greater voluntary compliance

CBDT reaffirmed its commitment to building a simplified, transparent, and technology-driven tax system, ensuring ease of compliance and widening the tax base.
