DGFT amended Import Policy of Certain Silver Jewellery Items

The Government of India has amended the import policy of certain jewellery items classified under Chapter 71 of the ITC (HS), 2022, Schedule–I (Import Policy). The amendment has been notified by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) through Notification No. 63/2025-26 dated 16 March 2026, issued under the provisions of the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992.

In exercise of powers conferred under Section 3 and Section 5 of the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992, read with paragraphs 1.02 and 2.01 of the Foreign Trade Policy 2023, the Central Government has amended the import policy relating to ITC (HS) Codes 71131144 and 71131145. These codes fall under the broader category of “Articles of jewellery and parts thereof, of precious metal or of metal clad with precious metal.” The specific items covered include silver jewellery studded with diamonds (HS Code 71131144) and silver jewellery studded with other precious and semi-precious stones (HS Code 71131145).

Prior to this amendment, the import of these items was categorized as “Free”, allowing imports without prior authorization under the Foreign Trade Policy. However, as per the revised notification, the import policy has now been changed from “Free” to “Restricted.” Consequently, importers will be required to obtain the necessary authorization or permission from the competent authority before importing these items into India.

The notification further clarifies that the revised import policy will remain effective immediately and will be applicable up to 30 June 2026. The measure is aimed at ensuring better regulation and monitoring of imports of certain categories of silver jewellery under the existing trade policy framework.
