Tamil Nadu’s Commercial Taxes Department collected ₹1,43,915 crore in gross revenue in FY26, up ₹6,047 crore or 4.4 per cent from FY25, Logesh Tamilselvan, Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration, said in the Assembly on Monday, while laying down the Commercial Taxes Policy Note 2026-27.
Of this, GST revenue (SGST + IGST) stood at ₹78,120 crore in FY26 as compared to ₹75,518 crore in FY25, representing a 3.4 per cent growth y-o-y.
Further, in case of non-tax revenues, the department recorded a 10-year high of ₹25,546 crore in stamp duty revenue during FY26 across 35.51 lakh registered documents—a 16.3 per cent surge from the previous period, as per the Stamps and Registrations policy note presented by the Minister.
Surcharge collection on property transfers hit ₹4,380 crore in FY26 with ₹4,248 crore transferred directly to urban and rural local bodies. In the three-month period from April-June 2026, ₹1,135 crore was collected as the amount of surcharge on stamp duty.
As per Tamilselvan, data analytics has emerged as a major tax revenue augmentation tool. The Minister said the department had partnered with IIT-Hyderabad for a Big Data Analytics Solution project for a three-year beginning with effect from December 2023, to identify revenue leakages and improve tax collections.
The scrutiny of taxpayers for assessment years 2018-19 to 2023-24 has already helped realise around ₹6,220 crore between December 2023 and March 2026 through these and other revenue augmentation measures, Tamilselvan said.
The department has also established 49 biometric verification centres, including eight provided by CBIC, with 55 booths across the State. These are being used to verify GST registrations and documents, particularly where Aadhaar authentication has not been completed.
Ease of doing business remains a major focus, with GST registration, return filing, payments and refunds fully digitalised, the minister said detailing the department’s efforts.
The taxpayer grievance mechanism resolved 3,306 queries during FY26, while the Quality Monitoring Wing oversaw 15,279 rectification orders during the year.
“FIFO (First In First Out) method in registration of documents is being followed in the Sub-Registrar Offices, that is, on time-slot wise. For the welfare of the senior citizens, the executant or claimant who have crossed the age of 70 years, are given priority and can register immediately on their visit to the office without waiting for their turn in the office,” the Minister said in the policy note.
Further the Department has also enhanced operations to provide citizens with facilities such as anywhere registration, paperless registration and presence less registration, enabling citizens to complete registration services from any location without having to visit a Sub-Registrar Office.
