Lucknow: The CB) arrested the superintendent of central goods and services tax (CGST), Amroha, Nishan Singh Malli, and tax advocate Amit Khandelwal for accepting a bribe of Rs. 1 lakh — the first instalment of a Rs 4 lakh demand — from a complainant in exchange for waiving penalties.
The CBI registered a case on June 9, following a complaint filed by a businessman who manages the affairs of his family-run private company. According to the FIR, the CGST superintendent issued a penalty notice to the complainant’s company over non-filing of GST returns. The accused duo allegedly demanded Rs4 lakh to revoke the penalty proceedings. CBI officials said that Khandelwal, who represented the complainant in the matter, entered into a criminal conspiracy with Malli. Instead of protecting his client’s interest, the advocate reportedly coerced the complainant to pay the bribe to the CGST official. Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and caught both accused red-handed while accepting Rs1 lakh in bribe money. Subsequent searches were conducted at various premises linked to the accused in Amroha and Gajraula, which may yield further evidence, officials said.
Malli is posted as CGST superintendent at Gajraula and currently holds additional charge of CGST, Amroha.
