CBI catches Rohtak tax officer taking Rs 50,000 bribe

An Income Tax Officer in Haryana’s Rohtak was caught by the CBI accepting bribe of Rs 50,000 from a 62-year-old man. Hemant Kumar Nain, an officer at the Income Tax Commissionerate, allegedly concealed his identity and demanded bribe in connection with an Income Tax Notice to the elderly man.

However, Hemant Nain was not arrested as he developed a medical condition after being caught by the probe agency. A case was registered against him on March 9.

According to the complainant, the elderly man’s daughter, her father had received a notice from the Income Tax Department for the financial year 2019-20 and the assessment year 2020-21. He submitted his response through the online portal on January 28.

On February 5, the complainant’s father received a WhatsApp call from a person claiming to be Sanjay Kumar from the Income Tax Office in New Delhi.

The caller informed him that a demand notice for Rs 1 crore was about to be issued, following which, the 62-year-old man asked the caller to speak to his daughter regarding the matter.

The caller, posing as Sanjay Kumar, allegedly demanded Rs 5 lakh to avoid the demand notice and to close the case.

After negotiation, the bribe amount was allegedly reduced to Rs 2 lakh, and the caller suggested that the money be sent via hawala or handed over in Delhi. The accused later agreed to collect the bribe money from the complainant’s father at Netaji Subhash Place in New Delhi.

The CBI set up a trap there, and Nain was caught accepting Rs 50,000 from the complainant’s father. He had been using the name Sanjay Kumar to conceal his identity.

CBI officials conducted searches at Nain’s residence and office in Rohtak and Sonipat, Haryana, where they recovered documents and electronic evidence.

Further investigation is underway.
