Businessman Arrested for ₹9.9 Crore GST Evasion in Guwahati

A 39-year-old businessman, Varun Goyal, was arrested by the Commissionerate of State Goods and Services Tax (SGST), Kar Bhawan, Guwahati, on Tuesday, June 10, for causing substantial revenue loss to the government by fraudulently availing and passing on Input Tax Credit (ITC) using fake invoices.

The arrest follows an investigation conducted by officials of the Taxation Department, who had earlier carried out an inspection, search and seizure at the premises of M/s Shiv Traders, operated by Goyal. The search was carried out a day earlier, during which incriminating documents were found, indicating large-scale tax evasion.

According to the taxation department, the accused admitted during the proceedings that he had indulged in fraudulent activities to secure financial gain. Based on evidence collected so far, the department has estimated the total GST evasion at ₹9.90 crore, covering the financial years from 2023-24 to 2025-26.

Following his arrest, Goyal was taken for a medical examination and later produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro). After hearing the case and reviewing the evidence presented, the judge remanded him to judicial custody until June 23.

The Finance (Taxation) Department of Assam confirmed that further investigations will continue to ascertain the full extent of the alleged tax fraud.
