Assam GST Dept Uncovers Rs 8.2 Crore Tax Evasion in NHPC’s Subansiri Hydro Project

A major multi-crore tax evasion case has been uncovered by the Assam GST department involving the construction of a concrete gravity dam for NHPC’s 2,000-MW Subansiri Lower Hydro Electric Project at Gerukamukh, located on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

According to reports, during a raid conducted this week, officials recovered over ₹8.2 crore in connection with irregularities by M/s BGS SGS SOMA Joint Venture, the contractor handling the dam construction under NHPC. Authorities indicated that the recovered amount is likely to rise significantly, as the enforcement operation is still ongoing.

Superintendent of State Tax, Monuj Kumar Dowari, who led the 10-member enforcement team, said, “A significant tax evasion case involving M/s BGS SGS SOMA Joint Venture has been unearthed. The swift action led to the on-the-spot recovery of Rs 8.2 crore, making this one of the most successful enforcement drives in recent months. This underscores the department’s enhanced focus on data-driven tax compliance,” the reports quoted him saying.

The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, one of the largest power ventures in Northeast India, has faced several delays over the years due to technical, environmental, and regulatory hurdles. The emergence of large-scale tax evasion now adds another layer of controversy to this high-profile infrastructure project.
