Amazon witnesses 60% growth in 2-wheeler sales backed by GST benefits

E-commerce giant Amazon has witnessed around 60 per cent year-on-year sales growth in terms of value in its two-wheeler portfolio in the first two weeks of the festive sales, backed by GST rate cut benefits.

The e-commerce company has seen a double-digit y-o-y growth in sales pan-India during the first two weeks of the Great Indian Festival for around 1,500 products across brands in Home, Kitchen and Outdoors categories, Director, Amazon India, told businessline.

“In the last two weeks of our Great Indian Festival, our two-wheeler portfolio registered about 60 per cent y-o-y sales growth. Obviously, the GST rate cut helps the growth, and also the range of brands that we have now launched,” he said.

In its two-wheeler portfolio, the e-commerce company has products from entry level segments from Ola Electric and Ather Energy to premium segments like Bajaj Chetak, among others.

“We have launched a bunch of very, very premium and super premium brands like Harley-Davidson and Royal Enfield. So it’s both selection expansion as well as some of the GST benefits that we see. It’s also the amount of work we did this time on the customer experience. We are now delivering vehicles on an average in under six days across 500 cities,” he said.

This year, almost the month-long Amazon Great Indian Festival began on September 22.

GST bonanza

“There was a large GST bonanza that the government gave the entire country. Naturally, white goods, where there was a big swing in the GST rates coming down from 28 per cent to 18 per cent, saw a huge lift. And then, kitchen appliances and robotic vacuum cleaners witnessed a 40-50 per cent year over year growth. Furniture saw a six-time demand jump versus our usual days, with customers pretty much ordering from across the country,” he said.

Amazon said, in Kolkata, sales of kitchen appliances surged 140 per cent y-o-y, led by coffee machines, air purifiers, deep fryers, fans, water purifiers, and premium cookware. Kitchen storage and tools also saw strong growth. Home décor — including LED bulbs, string lights, diyas, floor lamps, home temples, and chandeliers — experienced heightened demand, while TV cabinets emerged as the top-spiking furniture category. Overall, the home segment in Kolkata grew significantly.

During the festive sales for the last two weeks, the city reported a heightened demand for car care, accessories, and connected mobility products, reflecting increased festive demand for vehicle-related products.
