Sub-committee on tax and non-tax under the Mizoram resource mobilisation committee (MRMC) met on Friday to explore strategies to receive more revenue through goods & services tax (GST) collection in the state.
Chaired by former state chief secretary Haukhuma Hauzel, the committee recommended strengthening the directorate of taxation, particularly its intelligence and enforcement wings, to boost revenue. It also urged officials to improve operational efficiency by streamlining tasks and leveraging information technology.
The committee decided to ask govt departments to support efforts to increase GST collection. It proposed the opening of site offices in govt buildings across Aizawl to facilitate payment and improve accessibility.
To increase compliance, the panel discussed how firms already registered under GST could contribute more, and recommended a special drive to identify and register businesses — such as catering services, picnic venues, and tourist resorts — with an annual turnover exceeding Rs 20 lakh.
It was noted that GST collection in the current fiscal (April-June) stood at Rs 255.17 crore, compared to Rs 287.33 crore in the same period last year and Rs 274.07 crore in 2023, indicating a downward trend in revenue.
