Commercial tax inspector arrested for taking Rs 20L bribe in Bengaluru

An inspector with the commercial taxes department has been arrested for allegedly taking a Rs 20-lakh bribe to facilitate the illegal transportation of paan masala consignments to Bengaluru.

Nijanandamurthy MR was arrested by the Lokayukta police near Nagarabhavi on Thursday when he was allegedly taking Rs 20 lakh in cash from an individual named Manoj M.

The Lokayukta police said that the arrest was made following leads about department officials taking bribes to facilitate illegal transportation of paan masala consignments from Delhi to Bengaluru via the national highway.

Such illegal facilitation has caused losses of crores of rupees to the exchequer.

The arrest was made by a team headed by Pavan Najjur, Lokayukta Superintendent of Police (Bengaluru Rural). Nijanandamurthy has been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
