GST Registration Simplified — New Options For Business Premises on GST Portal

In a welcome move towards Ease of Doing Business, the Government has simplified GST registration by introducing new categories under “Nature of Possession of Premises” in FORM GST REG-01.

As per Notification No. 05/2026–Central Tax dated October 26, 2026, the revised GST registration form recognises five key categories:

  1. Co-working Space
  2. Consent Based
  3. In the Name of Deceased Ancestor
  4. Owned
  5. Rented/Leased

Further, CBIC’s Circular No. 257/03/2026-GST dated October 26, 2026 provides guidelines on supporting documents and seeks to prevent unnecessary queries by GST officers during registration.

Effective from November 1, 2026, these changes are expected to benefit startups, professionals, MSMEs and businesses operating from shared, rented or family-owned premises.

A much-needed, taxpayer-friendly GST reform aimed at reducing documentation hurdles, registration delays and promoting Ease of Doing Business!
