GST Portal Enables “Multi-State Registration” Facility: One Master TRN for Registration Applications Across Multiple States/UTs

October 01, 2026: A new option titled “Multi-State Registration” has been made available on the GST Common Portal. It appears on the portal’s home page alongside the existing “Register” and “Login” options and can be accessed at https://reg.gst.gov.in/registration/msr.

The facility allows an applicant to initiate GST registration applications for more than one State or Union Territory through a common registration flow. Until now, a business seeking registration in several States had to file a separate application for each State.

As displayed on the portal, the facility is enabled only for Normal Taxpayers. The “I am a” field is pre-filled as “Taxpayer” and cannot be changed.

The application begins with two steps: User Credentials, followed by OTP Verification. The applicant selects the States/UTs from a multi-select list and enters the legal name of the business (as per PAN, and MCA records where applicable), the PAN, and the email address.

On completion, a single Master Temporary Reference Number (Master TRN) is generated for all the States/UTs selected. Upon submission of the Master TRN, the system generates separate State-specific TRNs for each selected State/UT.

The portal carries an important condition: multiple States/UTs can be selected, but only one registration can be applied for in a particular State/UT using one Master TRN.

For example, a business seeking registration in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala can select all three States in one application. One Master TRN will be generated, followed by three State-specific TRNs, one for each State.

According to reports, the common profile entered at the Master TRN stage will be auto-populated in the State-specific applications. Applicants should therefore ensure that the details are complete and accurate before proceeding.

As of now, no notification, circular, or advisory setting out the eligibility, procedure, documentation, and other conditions of this facility appears to have been issued by the Government, CBIC, or GSTN. It appears that the functionality has gone live on the portal ahead of the formal guidelines.

Taxpayers and professionals are advised to await the official notification and detailed guidelines before taking any final action based on this facility.
