FM Nirmala Sitharaman, IMF deputy MD discuss growth, economic shifts

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman Monday discussed bilateral engagement and the outlook for the Indian and global economies with visiting IMF deputy managing director Nigel Clarke.

The discussions covered India-IMF relations, the country’s evolving growth trajectory, and the implications of shifts in the global economic environment, including India’s trade agenda and developments in the global trading system, including recently concluded bilateral trade agreements.

“Both sides emphasised the importance of continued India-IMF engagement in strengthening macroeconomic cooperation, supporting sound policies and contributing to greater regional and global economic resilience,” the finance ministry said in a social media post. Clarke appreciated India’s role in supporting the South Asia Regional Training and Technical Assistance Centre (SARTTAC).

“Mr. @NigelClarkeJa acknowledged India’s economic performance, resilience and growth track record in the current global scenario, and Government of India’s efforts for fiscal consolidation and support measures in the aftermath of the West Asian crisis,” the ministry said. In a separate social media post, Clarke said he had arrived in India for meetings with key policymakers and private sector representatives and looked forward to “fruitful discussions in New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai over the week”.

Sitharaman Monday chaired a meeting with senior officials of the Department of Economic Affairs to review key outcomes of the BRICS Finance Track and preparations for the upcoming meeting of BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors. India holds the presidency of BRICS 2026.

The final Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting is slated in Mumbai on September 9-10, ahead of the BRICS Leaders’ Summit.
