CBIC Appoints Common Adjudicating Authority for KPR Sugar Mills Cases to Streamline Adjudication of Multiple Show Cause Notices

The Government of India, through the Ministry of Finance (Department of Revenue), has issued Notification No. 29/2026–Customs (N.T.) dated 20th March, 2026, published in the Gazette of India (Extraordinary), appointing a common adjudicating authority for the purpose of adjudication of multiple show cause notices issued to entities including KPR Sugar Mill Limited and related units in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Exercising powers under Sections 3, 4(1), and 5(1) and (1A) of the Customs Act, 1962, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has designated officers, primarily at the level of Additional Commissioner or Joint Commissioner of Customs, to exercise powers and discharge duties in respect of cases originally handled by various adjudicating authorities such as Deputy/Assistant Commissioners and Preventive formations. The notification consolidates adjudication under specified authorities, including those based in Tuticorin, Chennai, and Tiruchirappalli, to ensure uniformity and administrative efficiency. The notification comes into effect from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette.
