More than 13.8 lakh businesses and traders in Gujarat, including thousands in Ahmedabad, may see a change in their monthly GST return filing after a recent update to the GST portal introduced an additional confirmation step before submitting GSTR-3B.
The feature, introduced by the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN), requires taxpayers to confirm a detailed breakup of their tax liability, specifying whether the tax being paid relates to the current month or to invoices from earlier periods reported later. Experts say the move is aimed at improving transparency but may initially add to compliance efforts.
Under the update, the portal automatically displays whether the tax being paid relates to the current month or to supplies from earlier months reported later. Taxpayers must open the tab on the payment page and click “save” to confirm the breakup before filing.
The feature is meant to identify cases where tax dues of an earlier period are paid later. Under the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, interest may be charged if tax for a previous period is cleared in a later month.
Over 13.8 lakh taxpayers in Gujarat
The update could affect a large number of businesses in the state. GST portal data shows Gujarat has more than 13.82 lakh registered GST taxpayers, after over 57,000 new registrations between October 2025 and February 2026.
In FY 2024-25, Gujarat collected about Rs 1.36 lakh crore in GST, placing it among the top contributors to the national tax pool.
Portal glitch under review
GSTN has acknowledged that some taxpayers are seeing the confirmation tab even when there is no past liability. The issue is under review, and taxpayers have been advised to open the tab and click “save” before filing their monthly returns.
Experts say move will aid compliance
Vice chairman of the Ahmedabad branch of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, said the “Tax Liability Breakup” tab is a transparency and reconciliation tool that helps identify earlier-period tax liabilities being paid in the current return.
“It does not increase the tax burden but adds an additional compliance step. Due to the current portal issue, confirmation is required in all cases, which may cause temporary inconvenience. Once corrected, the feature will strengthen GST compliance and reporting accuracy.”
