Tata Consumer receives ₹98 crore income tax demand for FY23, to challenge order

Tata Consumer Products Ltd has received an income tax (IT) demand of about ₹98.03 crore following an assessment of the IT return it filed for FY23.

In a regulatory filing, the company said that the Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax, Circle-4(1), Kolkata, issued an assessment order under Section 143(3) of the Income-tax Act relating to the FY23 return.

“The Company has received an Assessment Order dated 13 March 2026 under section 143(3) of Income-tax Act, 1961, for the income tax return filed for the financial year 2022-23, wherein certain additions/disallowances with respect to returned income have been made by the Assessing Officer. The demand raised is ₹98,03,33,930 (including interest).” Tata Consumer said in a regulatory filing.

Tata Consumer said it believes the demand is “not maintainable” and is in the process of filing an appeal against the order. The company added that the assessment will not have any immediate impact on its financial position or operations.

Tata Consumer Products, which owns brands such as Tata Tea, Tetley, Tata Salt, and Tata Sampann, is among India’s largest packaged food and beverage companies.

The company reported consolidated revenue of over ₹15,000 crore in FY25. Revenue for Q3 FY26 was up 15–16 per cent to ₹5,112–5,120 crore, with the company eyeing a ₹20,000 crore revenue run rate by FY26.
