The Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) on February 16, 2026 has formally commenced its operations, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the appellate framework under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime.
In its initial phase, the Tribunal has received 1,029 cases filed online, demonstrating strong response and confidence among stakeholders in the newly operational system. With one case already disposed of, the Tribunal has officially set the adjudicatory process in motion.
The establishment of GSTAT represents a major step towards institutionalising a robust, technology-driven dispute resolution mechanism. The Tribunal aims to streamline procedures, enhance efficiency, and ensure that justice is delivered with precision and consistency.
The foundation being laid at this stage is expected to facilitate faster, transparent, and taxpayer-friendly dispute resolution across the country.
Reaffirming its commitment to strengthening the appellate structure under GST, the Tribunal will focus on delivering efficient, fair, and reasoned outcomes, thereby contributing to greater certainty and confidence in the indirect tax ecosystem.
The operationalisation of GSTAT underscores the Government’s continued emphasis on institutional capacity-building and effective tax administration in line with the principles of transparency, accountability, and ease of doing business.
