CGST Guwahati Arrests Two in Fake Invoice Racket; 8.59 Crore Evasion Detected

The Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Guwahati Commissionerate arrested two individuals on Friday, November 14, following an operation into an alleged fake invoice network. Initial findings linked to two of the firms have revealed a GST revenue loss of ₹8.59 crore, and the action was taken under Sections 132(1)(b) 132(1) (c) and 132(1)(f) of the CGST Act, 2017.

Officials said the anti-evasion unit had received specific intelligence indicating the use of more than 50 suspicious GST registrations to issue invoices without actual supply of goods or services. The invoices were allegedly generated to pass on fraudulent GST credit to multiple recipients.

Acting on the information, the commissionerate located two persons identified as key members of the group and conducted a search on November 13. During interrogation, the accused admitted to obtaining GST registrations for non-existent firms and issuing fake invoices for monetary gain.

The two were arrested after officials assessed the seriousness of the violations. They were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody. Authorities stated that the investigation remains active and further arrests are possible.

Officials expect the figure to rise as the probe covers more entities and examines the full scale of the alleged network.
