More GST cuts likely? PM Modi says tax burden to ease further

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (September 25) said reforms in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime will continue, and the tax burden on citizens will gradually be reduced as the country’s economy gains strength.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show 2025, Modi said the country now enjoys a unique combination of political stability, policy predictability, and strong public will — creating an ideal environment for reforms.

“India is proudly celebrating a ‘GST Bachat Utsav’,” he said. “We introduced GST in 2017, brought further reforms in 2025, and we are not stopping here. As the economy grows, the tax burden will decrease. With the people’s blessings, GST reforms will continue.”

Major tax reliefs for citizens

Highlighting recent steps, Modi noted that income up to ₹12 lakh has been made tax-free, and this, along with new GST reforms, is expected to save citizens ₹2.5 lakh crore in 2025 alone.

He said his government has significantly reduced taxes, curbed inflation, and boosted both income and savings, especially for the poor and middle class.

‘Make in India’, ease of doing business in focus

Modi highlighted the government’s focus on ‘Make in India’, ease of doing business, and regulatory reforms. Over 40,000 compliances have been removed, and hundreds of minor business offences have been decriminalized.

He said a strong swadeshi (indigenous) sentiment is sweeping across India, with citizens proudly choosing local products. “This is the time for traders and entrepreneurs to make ‘swadeshi first’ their business mantra,” he added.
