Study in detail revenue losses due to GST rate rationalisation, says Deputy CM

Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka directed the Commercial Taxes department to study in detail the revenue losses that are likely to be incurred due to the rationalisation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate and submit a report to the government.

He underscored the need for strict action against those evading GST as also the need for putting in place a continuous surveillance system stating that negligence by the officials concerned could jeopardise the State’s revenues. Officials should leverage Artificial Intelligence on a regular basis towards this end.

Mr. Bhatti Vikramarka suggested that the department officials formulate an action plan to overcome the challenges faced in tax collection arising out of transactions taking place across the State. The Deputy Chief Minister made the remarks during a review meeting on Friday to assess the progress achieved during the current year as compared with the previous year in enforcement, audit and other divisions of the department.

He favoured formation of internal committees within the department to study ways for increasing revenue and the reports should be submitted to the government. The entire Commercial Taxes machinery should be geared up to achieve the targeted revenues besides identifying areas where revenue was being lost. As part of the efforts, the performance of the staff and business transactions at the field level should be continuously monitored from the headquarters.

Mr. Bhatti Vikramarka said he would forthwith review the performance of the department once every fortnight.
