Navrangpura police have registered a case against a chartered accountant (CA) from Ambawadi, Ahmedabad, and his friend for allegedly defrauding a businessman of ₹217 crore through a massive GST scam. The businessman, who had been made a temporary partner in a company by the accused, claims the two forged signatures on cheques and executed financial transactions without his knowledge.
Investigation reveals manipulation of accounts
According to the complaint, the businessman, Adeshwar Mehta, resident of Jaymangal Residency in Shahibaug, had been running a mobile phone business on Ashram Road. He had approached a friend, Nandan Mehta of Ruddhika Row House, Satellite, in 2014 for a recommendation for a reliable chartered accountant. Nandan introduced him to Mitul Ghelani, a CA based in Avani Tower, Ambawadi, who handled Adeshwar’s audit work over the years.
Temporary directorship leads to fraud
In 2020, Nandan Mehta reportedly asked Adeshwar to join his wife’s cotton ginning company in Himatnagar temporarily as a director, citing her difficulties in managing a pending land dispute. Trusting his friend, Adeshwar agreed and signed several documents at Ghelani’s office. An account in the name of Mehta Marketing was opened at Mehsana Urban Co-operative Bank, Swastik Crossroads, Navrangpura, during ongoing VAT-related disputes.
Forgery and misuse of authority
Adeshwar resigned from the company in 2022. In 2024, Ghelani allegedly summoned him, claiming his signature was needed for a GST dispute. In January 2025, Adeshwar received a GST department email and learned that Mitul Ghelani and Nandan Mehta had operated the bank account without his consent. The accused reportedly used forged signatures on cheques and carried out financial transactions worth ₹210 crore to evade GST.
Multiple bogus accounts under investigation
Police investigations revealed that the accused had also opened fraudulent accounts in the names of other individuals and executed multi-crore GST frauds. Authorities have indicated that further significant revelations are expected as the probe continues with the assistance of financial experts.
