Customs officer caught taking bribe near Kandla Port

A Class III officer of the customs department was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 9,850 near Kandla Port on Thursday. The accused, identified as Jignesh Baliya, was nabbed in a trap laid by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Gandhidham.

According to the ACB, Baliya was posted at the gate of Deendayal Port and had allegedly demanded the bribe to permit the exit of 197 truck trips, charging Rs 50 per trip, from the complainant’s company premises.

Refusing to pay the illegal amount, the complainant — an operations in-charge at a private firm responsible for customs clearance and managing the movement of goods in and out of the port — approached the ACB Gandhidham unit.

Based on the complaint, the ACB set up a sting operation and apprehended Baliya while he was accepting the bribe amount.
