2 persons posing as GST officers to rob Panipat accountant of Rs 29 lakh

An accountant was allegedly robbed of Rs 29 lakh by two persons posing as GST officials near Samalkha bypass on the Panipat-Khatima highway Tuesday night.

The victim, identified as Sukhnaam, is employed with a factory in Noorwala, Panipat.

Sukhnaam told the police that he along with driver Anil was returning with the money in a car from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. The two were heading to Panipat.

As soon as we reached the Samalkha bypass, two men stepped out from a car and stopped our vehicle. They introduced themselves as GST officials. One of them then sat in our car and accused us of GST fraud. The other person snatched the bag carrying the cash and ordered us to visit the nearby police station, Sukhnaam told the police.

There were a few more persons in their car, he said, adding that “Indian Govt” was also inscribed on the car.

Following the information about the incident, police personnel from Samalkha and nearby Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh, including UP deputy inspector general of police Abhishek Singh, Shamli superintendent of police Ramsewak Gautam, and assistant superintendent of police Santosh Kumar, reached the spot.
